KOGI MOVES TO PROTECT STUDENTS AS GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES PREVENTIVE STATEWIDE SCHOOL CLOSURE

LOKOJA, KOGI. 3RD FEBRUARY 2026

The Kogi State Government has announced the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, beginning Wednesday, 4 February 2026, following security intelligence indicating potential threats to public institutions, particularly schools.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo approved the directive as part of an emergency precautionary measure aimed at protecting students, teachers, and education facilities while security agencies strengthen surveillance and carry out strategic operations across key locations in the state.

State authorities have emphasised that the decision is preventive and based on credible intelligence assessments rather than any confirmed attack. Officials stressed that the safety of school children and education workers remains a top priority, noting that the government prefers early protective action over reactive measures in the face of potential threats.

Education stakeholders have described the move as a temporary adjustment to the academic calendar, effectively bringing forward the scheduled mid term break. While an exact reopening date has not been officially confirmed, early indications suggest that schools could resume academic activities around mid February, depending on the outcome of ongoing security evaluations.

Security sources indicate that the measure may also allow law enforcement agencies to conduct targeted operations aimed at disrupting criminal activities and dismantling suspected hideouts. Authorities have reassured residents that security presence across the state is being intensified, with coordinated efforts involving multiple security agencies.

Parents and guardians have been encouraged to ensure students remain safe at home and continue personal study during the period. School administrators have also been directed to comply fully with the government directive and maintain communication with parents regarding academic continuity plans.

The development comes amid broader national concerns about the protection of educational institutions, as authorities across Nigeria continue to strengthen preventive security strategies around schools and other vulnerable public spaces.

Government officials have reiterated their commitment to restoring normal academic activities as quickly as possible once security agencies confirm that the environment is safe for students and staff to return to classrooms.

INSIGHT

The decision by the Kogi State Government highlights an evolving security approach that prioritises intelligence led prevention over crisis response. In recent years, security experts have increasingly advised governments to act on early warning intelligence to reduce the likelihood of attacks on vulnerable locations such as schools.

For Kogi State, this action sends a strong message about the importance of protecting young people and maintaining public confidence in state security systems. While temporary school closures can create short term academic challenges, the long term objective remains the preservation of lives and educational stability.

Moving forward, sustained collaboration between security agencies, education authorities, and local communities will be essential to ensure that preventive measures translate into lasting safety improvements. Clear and consistent communication from government will also play a critical role in maintaining public trust as the situation develops.
