NIIGERIA’S SNOW TRAILBLAZER SET TO INSPIRE AT MILANO CORTINA 2026

MILAN, ITALY. 5TH FEBRUARY 2O26.
Nigeria is set to return to the global winter sports stage as cross country skier Samuel Ikpefan prepares to compete at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. As the nation’s only representative, Ikpefan once again carries both national pride and continental symbolism into a sporting arena historically dominated by countries with deep winter sports traditions and advanced snow infrastructure.
Born in France to a Nigerian father, Ikpefan’s journey reflects a powerful blend of heritage and determination. Initially a French youth sprint champion, he explored football and judo before dedicating himself fully to cross country skiing. After narrowly missing selection for the French national team earlier in his career, he made the defining decision to represent Nigeria. That choice not only transformed his personal sporting path but also helped shape Nigeria’s emerging identity in winter sports.
At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Ikpefan made history as Nigeria’s first ever Olympic cross country skier. His 73rd place finish in the men’s sprint event was widely recognised as a landmark achievement, especially given the limited access Nigerian athletes have to winter training facilities and competitive exposure.
The upcoming Milano Cortina Games are expected to feature approximately 15 athletes from eight African nations, highlighting gradual continental growth in winter sports participation. Nigeria, however, will once again rely solely on Ikpefan to represent the country in cross country skiing events.
Beyond competition, Ikpefan remains committed to inspiring young Nigerians to explore winter sports opportunities. Through mentorship and advocacy, particularly among diaspora communities, he continues to promote pathways for future Nigerian athletes on snow and ice.

Ikpefan’s Olympic presence represents more than participation. It symbolises the changing landscape of global sport, where resilience and opportunity increasingly overcome geographical limitations. While Nigeria remains distant from winter Olympic medal contention, consistent representation signals strategic ambition and long term sporting vision.
Sustained participation could encourage structured development programmes, diaspora athlete partnerships, and youth talent pathways. Across Africa, pioneers like Ikpefan continue to redefine sporting boundaries and expand the continent’s Olympic presence.
As Milano Cortina 2026 approaches, Ikpefan stands not only as Nigeria’s winter sports ambassador, but as a powerful reminder that global sporting dreams are no longer limited by climate or geography.
