Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has come under the spotlight following serious allegations she reportedly made linking Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his wife to the murder of the late Iniobong Umoren. The claims, allegedly shared with a US-based activist, suggested involvement in the killing and the removal of the deceased’s organs.

According to official reports, the allegations prompted a thorough investigation by the Nigerian Police Force. A petition from Sandra Duru of the Unique Family Foundation requested a full inquiry into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims. Police forensic analysis confirmed that the audio evidence linking Akpoti-Uduaghan to the statements was genuine.

Investigators visited Akwa Ibom State to review the details of the murder case, examining post-mortem reports, trial documents, and interviewing the victim’s family. Their findings confirmed that no organs were removed and that Uduak Frank Akpan had been convicted and sentenced to death for the murder in 2021. Consequently, the police concluded that the claims against Akpabio and his wife were unfounded.

The dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio dates back to February 2025, when the senator from Kogi Central raised concerns about alleged unfair treatment within the Senate. Tensions escalated amid prior accusations of sexual harassment against Akpabio, which he has consistently denied, and continued through a series of public media exchanges.

Following the police findings, the Attorney-General’s office filed criminal defamation charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan. However, the charges were later withdrawn after Akpabio opted not to pursue the matter further. Authorities have credited the petition by Duru for helping clarify public confusion surrounding the allegations.

The case underscores the significant impact of unverified claims in the political arena. Even allegations later proven false can strain reputations and fuel public misunderstanding. The prompt response by law enforcement demonstrates the importance of careful verification, while the measured withdrawal of legal action reflects a balance between justice and political discretion. Public figures navigating disputes must be mindful of the consequences of statements, as media scrutiny and legal oversight remain highly active in Nigeria’s political landscape.
