Airtel Nigeria is ushering in a new era for telecommunications in the country, with a bold expansion of its network and cutting-edge technology upgrades designed to meet the demands of a fast-growing digital economy. CEO Dinesh Balsingh emphasised that recent investments have begun to bear fruit, enhancing service quality and extending reliable connectivity even to previously underserved communities.
Since December 2023, Airtel has added 2,242 new network sites, bringing its total coverage to nearly 16,711 locations nationwide. Additionally, capacity has been upgraded in over 5,000 sites, ensuring that 99 per cent of the network now delivers fast and reliable 4G broadband, effectively positioning Airtel as a leader in national connectivity.
The company is also accelerating its 5G rollout, with the number of active sites more than doubling in just three months. The goal is to bring high-speed 5G to the top 20 cities, offering users smoother streaming, faster downloads, and seamless digital experiences.
In a significant move to enhance both reach and resilience, Airtel is expanding its fibre network by 25 per cent and collaborating with OneWeb and Starlink to bring satellite internet to businesses and remote communities. The introduction of a second internet breakout point from the South, via the 2Africa submarine cable in Akwa Ibom State, will provide an alternative route for traffic, improving speed and reliability across the nation.
Looking ahead, Airtel plans to launch a 38-megawatt hyperscaler-ready data centre in Eko Atlantic, further supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation and readiness for future growth.
